Tools for neuroscience research

We are developing and refining tools to aid in cell-type-specific molecular analyses of the mammalian nervous system. The Translating Ribosome Affinity Purification technique (Heiman et al., 2008) combines genetic tagging of translating ribosomes with their affinity purification from the mouse CNS. Analysis of TRAP-purified mRNAs that are bound to tagged ribosomes reveals the entire translated mRNA complement of the cell type of interest, regardless of the cellular complexity of the tissue that contained the cell type of interest. In addition to refining the TRAP technique, we are currently developing new tools that will allow synthetic lethal genetic screening in the mammalian CNS.
